What is Speedar?
Speedar allows any web browser to calculate its Internet connection speed. It downloads a large web page while noting the time before the download starts and again after it completes. The time difference is used calculate the average data transfer rate.
What does it run on?
Speedar works with any web browser that supports Javascript. The program can either download a medium (50 KB) or large-sized (500 KB) HTML document. The time between the start of the download and the end of the download is used to calculate the connection speed. The larger download returns more accurate speed results, but takes much longer on a dial-up connection.
On the server, Speedar is supported by two PHP scripts, so if you wish to run Speedar on your own website, PHP support is required. Speedar is known to work with PHP3 and PHP4.
Why is my speed slower than expected?
There are many reasons your Internet connection speed might be running slower
than expected. Some reasons include, but are not limited to:

Network Congestion
Similar to real-life highways, the so called "information superhighway" sometimes
has traffic problems. Depending on the time of day, net congestion can cause
serious slowdowns in your internet connection speed.

Server Load and Location
Your connection to some websites might be faster than to others due to a busy server
or specific bottlenecks between you and a specific site.

Too High Expectations
Many modems are marketed to work at speeds that are only sustainable in lab settings.
For example, no 56K modem ever reaches its full speed potential. If you are
doing anything near 42k on a modem, then you have about as good a connection as
you can get in practice.
Can I run Speedar on my site?
Yes, you can download and install the Speedar software on your own website.
